How to Use the Decking Calculator for Accurate Takeoffs
Follow this four-phase operational workflow to compute verified jobsite material quantities, statutory tax withholdings, or official score benchmarks with exact tolerances.
Primary Input Parameters
Enter total deck length and width in metres.
Regional Calibration
Select decking board width (120mm or 145mm) and expansion gap (standard 4–6mm).
Live Computational Takeoff
Set joist center spacing (standard 400mm for timber; 300–350mm for composite boards).
Verification & Export
Input timber cost per metre to compute board counts, linear metres, C16/C24 joists, screws, and total GBP (£) cost.
Engineering Quality Standards & Tolerance Verification
When compiling professional estimates using this tool, engineers and analysts must apply standard variance allowances. For physical construction substrates, account for in-situ sub-base settling (typically 15% to 20% for bulk aggregate) and subgrade irregularities. For fiscal withholding and payroll calculations, confirm statutory year-to-date caps against active government schedules (IRS, HMRC, CRA, or ATO). All output models on BentoQuilt are calibrated continuously against current administrative statutes and industrial benchmarks.
UK Decking Design: Subframe, Timber & Expansion Gaps (BSI / TRADA)
Designed in compliance with BSI / TRADA (British Standards Institution BS 5268 and Timber Research and Development Association) specifications. Building a timber or composite deck in the United Kingdom requires careful planning for weather durability. Due to frequent British rainfall and seasonal dampness, improper subframe ventilation or incorrect board spacing leads to rapid timber rot, fungal decay, and dangerous surface warping.
In the UK, pressure-treated C16 or C24 structural softwood timber (typically 47 × 150mm or 47 × 100mm) is used for the subframe joists, while deck boards are commonly profiled at 120mm or 145mm nominal widths.
UK Decking Board Formula
Total Linear Metres = [ Total Board Runs × Length of Deck (m) ] × 1.05
Number of Boards = Total Linear Metres ÷ Individual Board Length (m)
Worked Example: 5m × 3.5m Garden Deck
Suppose you are constructing a 5.0m long by 3.5m wide deck using 145mm grooved treated pine decking boards with a 5mm drainage gap and 4.8m board lengths:
- Effective Board Coverage: 145mm + 5mm gap = 150mm = 0.15 metres.
- Number of Board Rows: 3.5m ÷ 0.15m = 23.33 → 24 rows.
- Total Linear Metres: 24 rows × 5.0m = 120m + 5% cutting waste = 126 linear metres.
- Number of 4.8m Boards: 126m ÷ 4.8m = 26.25 → 27 boards.
- Subframe Joists: At 400mm centers along 5m length: (5.0m ÷ 0.4m) + 1 = 14 joists.
